Dayara Bugyal is situated in Garhwal, Uttarakhand, around 80 kilometres before Gangotri. The trekking routes to reach Dayara Bugyal start from Raithal and Barsu villages, which are accessible via Bhatawari.

Starting from Raithal or Barsu, you can reach Dayara Bugyal within 4 to 5 hours. About a kilometre before reaching Dayara Bugyal, there’s a great spot to pitch tents, and some small shepherd huts are also available that can be helpful for cooking.
The final kilometre of the trek reveals the beauty of the vast meadows. If you’re trekking in winter, the small streams might even be frozen due to the cold. From Dayara Bugyal, you can see many Himalayan peaks, with Bandarpunch and Kala Nag standing out in clear view. On the Barsu route, there’s a small temple dedicated to Nag Devta by a pond, which will leave you spellbound.

Raithal is located about 40 kilometres, and Barsu about 45 kilometres, from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand. Uttarkashi has good road connectivity with major locations like Rishikesh and Dehradun.
Nearest Airport: Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport serves as the closest airport for this journey, with several airlines offering both direct and connecting flights from various cities in India.
Nearest Railway Station: Dehradun is the nearest major railway station. You can catch a train to Dehradun, and from there, find a private taxi just outside the station to reach the Raithal base camp. Alternatively, if a train to Dehradun isn’t available, you can consider Rishikesh as an option.
Reaching Base Camp from Dehradun or Rishikesh
Private cabs are available outside both the Dehradun airport and railway station. For a more budget-friendly route, take a bus or shared taxi to Uttarkashi, and then transfer to another shared cab to reach Raithal or Barsu. The journey from Dehradun or Rishikesh to Raithal may take most of the day.
Tip: If you can’t reach Raithal by evening, consider spending a night in Uttarkashi.
Trekking Itinerary: For experienced trekkers, it takes about 4-5 hours to cover the 7 kilometres to the first day’s campsite. On the following day, trek an additional 1 kilometre to reach the Bugyal, where you can enjoy exploring the alpine meadows and surrounding nature. Afterward, return to the base camp, pack up, and make your way back.
Note: It's recommended to acclimate for at least one night to stay refreshed and energised. This will enhance your overall experience and make the trek more enjoyable.
Dayara Bugyal: Located at a high altitude of 3,650 metres amidst the rugged mountains of the Himalayas, Dayara Bugyal will be the final stop of your journey. This meadow is lush green during the monsoon, but the grass turns golden-brown in the winter due to the cold. The high Himalayan glaciers visible from here make the landscape even more beautiful. From December to February, snow blankets these meadows, creating a thick, white layer over the land.
Raithal: Raithal is a small village nestled in the Himalayan valleys, known as the base camp for the Dayara Bugyal trek. The village is home to an ancient Mahadev temple, beautifully constructed in the Garhwali style. The centuries-old Someshwar temple has a peaceful atmosphere that brings inner calm.
Panchpura House: Also located in Raithal village is Panchpura House, a 500-year-old structure and a major attraction here. This five-story building is crafted in a traditional architectural style, with most of it made from wood. Though currently uninhabited, its intricate wall carvings and old-world charm make it highly intriguing.
Barsu: If you trek to Dayara Bugyal from Raithal, you can visit Barsu on your way back. Like Raithal, Barsu is a small, scenic village nestled in a valley. The village has a Someshwar Mahadev temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is quite captivating. Strolling around the village gives you insight into the lifestyle of the local villagers.
Barnala Tal: On the route from Barsu to Dayara Bugyal, there is a small lake called Barnala Tal. Surrounded by deodar trees, this mysterious-looking lake is enchanting. Near the lake is a beautiful temple dedicated to the Snake God, Nag Devta. During winter, the lake freezes over, adding to its allure. You can spend some time at this lake during your trek to or from Dayara Bugyal.
