Legend has it that the statue of the Sun God floated in the air. A massive 52-metric ton magnet was placed on the dome of the main temple to achieve this. According to folklore, Bayazid Khan, son of the Bengal ruler Sulaiman Khan Karrani, and his general Kalapahad, conquered Odisha in 1568 and destroyed the temple's giant magnet. Shortly after, the Dutch attacked the temple by sea and caused severe damage.
The carvings on the temple depict human development over time. At the bottom are nature-related sculptures for children's learning, followed by erotic sculptures for young adults, and spiritual sculptures at the top.
