In 1933, Maharaja Krishnarajendra Wodeyar IV of Mysore had an old and small church rebuilt on such a grand scale that its magnificence can still be seen from far away in the city.
The foundation stone of this church was laid in 1840. At that time, it was a small church called the Cathedral of St. Joseph. It is a very sacred place for Catholics in Mysore.
Maharaja Krishnarajendra sought the help of the famous French architect Daly to design this church. This cathedral reflects the Neo-Gothic architectural style inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.
The floor plan of the church is designed in such a way that it forms the shape of a cross. The twin spires are the main attraction of the church, standing at a height of 175 feet. This is indeed an extremely unusual height for a church.
In 1802, the remains of a young girl's body were found in the Catacombs of St. Priscilla at the Via Salaria in Rome. Upon investigation, it was discovered that these remains belonged to St. Philomena, a young Greek princess who was martyred in the 4th century.
In 1843, a church was built in memory of the same princess by King Krishnarajendra III, which was later rebuilt and given its present form.
